Introduction to Occupational Therapy

Canadian Model of Occupational Performance and Engagement (CMOP-E) paper

Assignment Description

This assignment focuses on theory foundational to the occupational therapist practitioner’s view of people and occupational performance. The purpose of this assignment is to increase your understanding of the Canadian Model of Occupational Performance and Engagement (CMOP-E)

(CAOT, 2007) as you apply it to your own experience. However, in order to become better acquainted with the foundation of the CMOP-E, use the original CMOP (CAOT, 1997) from the PowerPoints of this course as your primary visual reference in organizing your thoughts.

An experiential understanding of this holistic model will serve you well as you organize your thoughts, information gathering, and treatment to best serve your clients as an OTA. The application of the

CMOP-E to case scenarios that may be presented when you are interviewing for an OTA position will also help you address the relevant points of that practice situation. We will be using the CMOP-E throughout much of the OTA Program to ground and guide us in application of occupational therapy practice.

This assignment is to be done individually. Your paper should be no longer than 4 pages: double

spaced, 12-point font.

Scenario:

Imagine that you broke your right ankle in a bad fall last week. You are in a cast from just below the

knee down and have to use crutches for the next 4 weeks. You are not allowed to put any weight on your right leg. Use the CMOP-E to analyze the effect your broken ankle will have on you and your ability to perform your typical daily occupations. In addition, consider how the principles of clientcentred practice will impact your rehabilitation from your broken ankle, should you receive occupational therapy intervention.

Assignment Steps

To complete this assignment:

1. Imagine the scenario of a broken right ankle and how it would affect performance of your daily

activities, for the period of one month.

2. Use the original CMOP (CAOT, 1997) to organize your thoughts. You can then expand on that

base by considering the ‘engagement’ portion of the CMOP-E (CAOT, 2007).

3. List your headings and subheadings, as follows:

 Spirituality

 Components of Occupational Performance

 Physical

 Cognitive

 Affective

 Areas of Occupational Performance

 Self-Care

 Productivity

 Leisure

 Environmental Elements of Occupational Performance

 Physical

 Cultural

 Social

Institutional

4. Under ‘Spiritualty’ and each subheading of the CMOP, list and briefly explain how that factor

would be influenced by the impact of your broken ankle.

• Include both positive and negative outcomes, as applicable.

• Be clear as to which outcomes fall under which factor. Limit overlap and repetition.

• Include less obvious considerations in your analysis (for example, effect of medication,

level of fatigue, use of assistive devices).

• Consider your full abilities, to include portions of occupations you are able to perform;

be cautious with the use of “I can’t”.

• Comment on how your ability to ‘engage’ in what you are able to do is affected.

5. Create another heading entitled ‘Client-Centred Practice’. List 3 principles of client-centred

practice that you feel would be most important to you if you were to receive occupational

therapy as part of your rehabilitation from your broken ankle. Briefly explain how each of those

principles would impact the treatment you receive. Include in your explanation if and how

client-centred care would impact your ‘quality of life’.
