Characterization is shown in the story by trees acting to stop the fight between the two men where they injure both Ulrich and Georg. This shows the conflict between the nature and people. This theme is also shown by the wolves answering the crying of Ulrich and Georg and coming where Ulrich and Georg were. The honor culture is shown by carrying the hate of family through three generation to the grandsons leading to them getting killed because of it.
