This project will help students learn about the data analytics issues and challenges in the various sub-specialties of Accounting: management accounting, financial statements, and tax. Students will conduct a deep dive into a topic, prepare a presentation, and engage in discussion.

In Module 5, we are exploring the Modern Accounting Environment and how data analytics can be applied in the audit context. We will also look ahead and illustrate how the same analytical tools can be used in other sub-specialties of Accounting, namely, managerial, financial, and tax.

Requirement(s)

You will work individually to research, digest, and discuss one of the three sub-specialties. Your task is to prepare a presentation on the sub-specialty of your choosing, share what you have learned in a class presentation, and produce a short, written abstract. You can use the textbook as a starting point but you should also conduct additional research to incorporate outside sources.

1. Presentation: Create a presentation, record your presentation, and share the recording with your classmates by posting a link to the presentation on the discussion board. The presentation should be about 10 minutes in length (it can be longer if needed). After your presentation, your classmates should have a good understanding of the topic. Your presentation should be fun and interesting, but, most importantly, informative. You can use free tools such as Loom for the recording. Your recording should include both audio and video.

2. Executive Summary: In addition to your presentation recording, you should also produce a one-page summary of your presentation (about 500 words). Post the Executive Summary on the discussion board with the link to your presentation.

Managerial Analytics: Use of Data and Data Analytics in Management Accounting (Chapter 7 of the textbook)

 

Questions your presentation should address for your chosen topic

· How is data analytics used

· What questions and problems can data analytics help with

· Who is doing the analyses and for whom

· What data is being used (types, quality issues, etc.) and where is it coming from

· Common KPIs (Key Performance Indicators)

· Challenges/problems

· Recent developments and "hot topics"

 

 

Grading

Your final grade for this assignment will be a combination of three things: (1) your professor’s evaluation of your presentation and your abstract, (2) your classmates' reaction and feedback on your presentation/abstract, and (3) your responses to your classmates' feedback, questions, and comments.

 

As before, remember to properly cite all your sources according to APA guidelines (see Sample Post in the Syllabus): how to include citations in presentations . Your post should contain the link to your recorded presentation and your Executive Summary. You should aim to meaningfully interact with all of your classmates.
