Rational of the Course:

Seminar is designed to introduce students to critical thinking-its importance and characteristics, and to facilitate the development of critical thinking skills as applied in academia to reading and writing.  In addition, this course will provide a forum for the development and dissemination of knowledge and understanding about relevant /contemporary business issues. Because critical thinking skills are best taught within a context or content area, this course will focus on applying critical thinking in business related field.

Course Objectives:

By the end of the course students should be able to:

?          Demonstrate clear insight into current developments in local and global business environments.

?          Participate in analysis and critical discussions on topical issues (Using Universal Intellectual Standards and other critical thinking tools)

?          Identify topics and issues relevant to the development of managerial and entrepreneurial skills

?          Conduct thorough research on topical issues by identifying a problem or an issue, analyzing it, and proposing a solution or making recommendation.

?          Present a well developed research paper in written form and orally (Using tools such as PowerPoint and public speaking skills)

Business Seminar Format

You will write a seminar paper of about 12-15 pages by following the steps below:-

1.         Title and the name of the author

2.         Declaration

3.         Abstract: this should not be more than 250 words.

4.         Introduction (What is your argument?): in this section you will identify a problem or contemporary issues in your area of specialization. Be sure that you explain why your selected topic is a problem or issue worthy exploring. Include sufficient background information about the topic. As part of your process work for your portfolio, be sure to save all your work including research articles, new clippings and the like in a file to be presented during oral presentation as evidence separate from the word document. Use Critical Thinking tools to help you develop a clear position or solution after/while considering alternative view points and stating your assumptions.(At the end of this section include at least three objectives to be achieved by this study)

 

 

 

 

5.         Brief Literature Review: in this section of your essay you are required to review a minimum of 10 scholarly journals about your topic of choice (Note: The journals should not be more than 5 years old). Be sure you apply the critical thinking analysis to the article that you include in your literature review. At the end of this section, make sure you clearly propose a solution or state your position.

 

 

6.         Supporting evidence: In this section discuss your objectives and include supportive evidence from the market to support your position. Be sure you have assessed the quality and authenticity of your supporting evidence.

 

7.         Critique-Provide feedback to help researchers strengthen not only the studies being appraised but also future research studies being planned on the same topics. Critiquing frameworks enable readers to make a decision regarding the dependability of the research.

 

8.         Conclusion: In this section you will be required to discuss the merits of your position or merits and implementation of your solution. Be sure to consider the consequences of your position.

 

9.         Recommendations: In light with your conclusion provide your proposal, or the way forward

 

10.       References:  Be sure you have complete and accurate reference section. For this section you will be required to use APA formatting.
