The Museums: Musée d’Orsay, Paris (see Realism and Impressionism Readings) Works of art, mainly by French artists, dating between 1848-1914 Museum of Modern Art, New York (See Avant-Garde and AbEx Readings) Works of art that are broadly defined as Modern, Post-Modern and Contemporary, from 1880 to today Museo Frida Kahlo (La Casa Azul), Mexico City (See Surrealism and Mexican Muralism Readings) A collection of works of art by Frida Kahlo, as well as photographs, clothing, and objects speaking to Kahlo’s life and her relationship with Diego Rivera INHOTIM, Minas Gerais, Brazil (See Brazilian Modernism Readings) Galleries and open-air installations by contemporary artists that involve the natural landscape of Minas Gerais Museum of African American Art, Los Angeles (See Harlem Renaissance Readings) Dedicated to the work of African American artists, specifically the artists of the Harlem Renaissance The Assignment - Get a sense of the institution by exploring the Google Arts and Culture page linked above. What are the online exhibitions? What are the stories they are trying to tell? - Each of the institutions above is a very different “type” of Museum: the Musee d’Orsay speaks to art from a particular moment in French history in a renovated train station, the MoMA seeks to define the narrative of Modern Art, the Museo Frida Kahlo is dedicated to just one artist and her work, INHOTIM brings art into the natural landscape where artists have made sitespecific works for the area, and the MAAA seeks to insert an under-represented and oftenexcluded narrative of art history back into the canon of Art History in an academic way. - Think about what your chosen institution seeks to add to the world of Art History. What is its purpose? - Think about how your chosen institution has adapted to the on-line model. What kind of works and exhibitions are featured? What does this say about the museum and its online presence? - Look through the works in the collection. Choose 1-2 works that you think best exemplify what you’ve learned about the institution/museum. Think about what this work means in terms of the institution’s narrative, and the art historical story they are telling. - Remember to use art history as well! Think about what you learned in class, or what you read in the in-class readings. - In this assignment, I want you to use critical thinking skills, historical context, and some light research to explain a work of art in terms of an institutions online presence. Things to Remember - Always cite your sources using CHICAGO STYLE - Avoid repetition - Fact-check yourself Peer Review Process: It is understood by many educators that writing is a great way of thinking through ideas, concepts, and arguments. I’ve also found that students that produce drafts of their work early write much better papers! For this assignment, I have included a mandatory “peer review” part. You will be randomly paired with a classmate over zoom, and will exchange drafts for review before final submission to me. Be kind but constructive in your review and remember that no paper is perfect! Give classmates direction in how you think it is best to improve. This will happen during our zoom class using the breakout rooms feature. Just be ready with a draft when you come to class on Thursday, May 6! This will happen through BB, using the TurnItIn feature!
