The commission would secure for the winning artist many years of employment as well as recognition and fame. To level the field for the participants-seven in all—the sample panel that was to be submitted for consideration had to meet certain criteria: it had to be made of bronze; the imagery had to be placed within an elaborate frame embellished by curves and triangles; and all of the artists had to depict the same subject-the sacrifice of Isaac (Fig. 6.1). Following the description of the event in the Old Testament, or Hebrew Bible, the content of the trial panels was specified further: each had to include Abraham, Isaac, two servants and a donkey, an altar, an angel, a sheep, and the suggestion of the setting of Mount Moriah. The book of Genesis contains the passage in which these details are found. God tests Abraham, who will ultimately become the father of the Hebrew people and a great prophet, by telling him to make of his son Isaac a burnt offering. Abraham saddles a donkey and leaves home with Isaac and two young men. When he arrives at the place that God has specified the sacrifice, Abraham binds Isaac to an altar and is about to slay him with a knife when, at the last moment, God, assured of Abraham's loyalty, sends an angel to stay his hand. The burnt offering to God in Isaac's place is a ram that Abraham spots in a nearby thicket. Lorenzo Ghiberti (1378–1455) was awarded the commission and worked on the project for 21 years. Shortly after the commission for the east-baptistery doors had gone out, the city of Florence came under the assault of the forces of the Duke of Milan, Gian Galeazzo Visconti. Florence was most certainly the underdog in this fight; most thought that the Milanese would prevail. But at the last moment, Gian Galeazzo contracted a fever, and a month later he was dead. The biblical story of the sacrifice of Isaac resonated with the Florentines.
