In March 2011, the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF) conducted a national survey of law enforcement agencies to gather data regarding their use of current technologies, including social media. One of the challenges that surfaced was how police management was being called on to respond to officers’ and other employees’ personal postings on social media sites. More than half of the responding agencies (57 percent) reported having already experienced problems with employees’ posting inappropriate content on their personal social media sites, and 58 percent of agencies had developed policies to address what employees were allowed to post on such sites (How Are Innovations in Technology Transforming Policing?, 2012).
