One of the topics we will cover in ENV 122 is Environmental Health. Emergent diseases are one
aspect of environmental health. For several years now the Smithsonian Museum of Natural
History has had an exhibit entitled "Outbreak" about past disease outbreaks, things that
contribute to outbreaks, and things that can be done to prevent outbreaks. The museum is open
but the exhibit was scheduled to end in October of this year so you can try to visit live or use
their website: https://naturalhistory.si.edu/exhibits/outbreak/digital-exhibit
For this project you should use the Smithsonian website as well as outside sources (that must be
cited) to address outbreaks in general and the impact of COVID-19 on the environment.
Different things you must address in this project: what is an outbreak? Epidemic? Pandemic?
Zoonotic disease? How do diseases spread from animals to humans? How can we prevent
outbreaks from occurring or when they do occur prevent them from becoming pandemics? After
you have given a general introduction addressing the points above, I want you to address
COVID-19 in particular. Where did it originate and how did it become a global pandemic? Then
I want you to address the impact of COVID 19 on some aspect of the environment. Maybe you
want to think about the wet markets of Wuhan and what we should do about those. Maybe you
want to address the impact COVID 19 has had on pollution. Or perhaps you would like to
address the impact COVID 19 has had on waste. You can even address policy or the economy as
we discuss those in ENV 122 as long as you relate it back to the environment. I not only want
you to describe the impact I also want you think about solutions to both our COVID 19 crisis as
well as environmental issues related to COVID 19. For example, if you talk about lockdowns
decreasing pollution, you would want to talk about how we can keep those environmental gains
while reopening our economies. Throughout your project you should touch on a minimum of
three topics we cover in ENV. As this project is about an outbreak, everyone will incorporate
environmental health (1), but if you use my example of lockdowns decreasing pollution, you
would also address pollution (2), and you could talk about switching to renewable energy (3) as a
solution that would enable us to keep the environmental gains while reopening our economies
(4). If you're not sure about your topic or approach, please contact me so we can discuss it and I
can offer suggestions or let you know if you are on the right track.
This project requires you to write a paper that needs to be a minimum of 5 double spaced pages,
with normal margins and fonts (i.e. 12 point Times New Roman). You also need to ensure that
you use at least 3 sources with the Smithsonian/website being one of your sources and that you
cite your sources.
