• Think back to a team you were a member of. For example, this can be a work team, athletic team, fine arts group, or social club. Identify the leader of that team. What characteristics dictated that leader's success or failure? Did the team members' behaviors impact the team's success? Discuss with your classmates how team success is dependent on both the leader and team members.

• Discuss with your classmates the issues to consider when deciding which aspects of your project for this course would be candidates for outsourcing. Use specific examples.

1. International Management

• s you read about quality imperative (pp. 292–293 in your eTextbook), you will see the mention of Apple turning to OLED displays to resolve quality issues in previous iPhone models. You might be surprised to learn, however, that Samsung was the first to introduce OLED display technology in their cell phones, years ahead of Apple, to help it gain a larger market share. Both highlight different applications of a quality imperative.

 

Share an example of a global company whose strategy is to achieve higher quality in order to increase market share and profitability. Discuss the improvements your selected company made and whether that strategy was deemed successful in satisfying company objectives.

 

Alternatively, you may discuss an experience you have had with a global product where the quality imperative efforts failed in your opinion. What impact did the failure have on the company, and why? For example, in 1985 Coca-Cola changed its formula after PepsiCo's "Pepsi Challenge" campaign showed consumers preferred the taste of Pepsi. Coca-Cola's launch of the "New Coke" to regain lost market share went down in history as a complete failure.

• After reading the Brief Integrative Case 3.1: "Google in China: Protecting Property and Rights," pp. 407–411 in your eTextbook, discuss how or whether companies like Google should conform to the Chinese government's expectations of censorship, privacy, and dissemination of information. Explain your rationale.

1. Standards for Healthcare Staff

• What is one conflict scenario that you may experience in the workplace? How would you apply the problem-solving steps from Chapter 7 in order to resolve this conflict?

• Imagine the following scenario: Your school scheduled a job interview for you, but you have been busy with family responsibilities and do not feel prepared. What would you do?

• You are a community health educator in the Southwest United States. Your county health department received a grant to create a new initiative that is designed to decrease smoking rates in the county. Your health commissioner and Board of Health want to create a team of teachers, parents, community leaders, and public health professionals to develop an intervention.

 

Discuss which cognitive and affective methods you believe would be useful for this purpose, and why? Give specific examples as you explain your rationale.

• Choose either the category of unintentional injuries (such as motor vehicle accidents) or intentional injuries (such as gunshot or stabbing). Identify basic U.S. epidemiology and persons most at risk for your category. Then discuss prevention strategies that you feel would be most effective in mitigating these injuries. Give specific examples, and explain your rationale for the strategies selected.

• A binding arbitration clause is a clause in a contract that states all disputes must be resolved by arbitration. Should businesses be allowed to contain binding arbitration clauses in their consumer contracts? Why, or why not?

• How does intellectual property law balance the rights of the creator/innovator with the rights of the public?

• One source of law in the United States is case law, sometimes called common law, which is based on the decisions of courts. The decision of a court resolves the dispute in the particular case that is in the court, but how can decisions of courts create a source of laws that apply beyond the case in which the decision was rendered?

• In arbitration, the parties to the dispute select an independent arbitrator who hears evidence from both parties and decides how the dispute should be resolved. In civil litigation, a judge or jury hears the evidence from both parties and decides how the dispute should be resolved. What are the differences between arbitration and civil litigation? Why is one approach better than the other approach to resolving disputes?

• In this unit, you learned about nonroutine skills and how management information systems (MIS) can help you to gain those skills. What nonroutine skills do you currently possess? Do you consider those skills to be marketable?

• The 2031 section on page 114 of the textbook provides an interesting discussion about the future of collaboration. After reading about the future of collaboration systems, how do you envision collaboration in your industry in the year 2031?

Describe the industry you currently work in or plan to work in along with a discussion of your vision of what collaboration will be like for your industry in the year 2031.

• Discuss what type of health services organization would be a good fit for you and why.
