Fictional Case Study:

FoodCo is one of the largest food and facilities management companies in Canada with over 10,000 employees from coast-to-coast. The Company has made some real strides in the past few years with its Diversity program which encourages a much more diverse workforce and has set targets to get there within a specific timeframe. The Company has received accolades from a number of magazines for its commitment to hiring Indigenous employees by being named in the Top 50 best places to work.

The Company created the FoodCo Foundation in 2010 to fight poverty and hunger in marginalized communities. Donations have been made to Indigenous communities across the country for training programs to help their members find gainful employment in the food services sector. Scholarships have been set up with a total of $100,000 going to the Indigenous College Fund, generating positive PR and goodwill towards the Company.

This praise comes as the Company prepares to deal with a major racial discrimination lawsuit. Filed on behalf of 250 current and former Indigenous employees, the case alleges that FoodCo has discriminated against Indigenous managers in promotions. A Company survey showed a very small percentage of upper-level promotions went to Indigenous employees.

Other complaints allege some employees were subjected to racially offensive language. The plaintiffs are seeking a monetary settlement and an overhaul of Company diversity practices.
