At a certain point in our lives, we all acquire certain behaviors, we may not be psychologists but we know if they are good or bad.  As behavior is a type of repetitive habit that a person has.  According to Walsh...2014, behavior theory is what a person does, thinks, or feels that can be observed.  Behavior theory consists of ideas about how human actions and emotions develop, are sustained, and are extinguished through principles of learning.  One of the principles of learning behavior is classical conditioning. According to Walsh "is a process of developing patterns of behavior through responses to environmental stimuli or specific behavioral consequences (Kazdin, 2000)."  Classical conditioning plays a role in understanding many problems that clients experience. (Walsh, 2014)

An example given by Walsh...2014, is "a client struggling with a drug problem may experience urges to use when experiencing a particular emotion, such as boredom."  People tend to use drugs for many different reasons, and for whatever reason, it is done it is an addiction.  According to (T;) "we define drug addiction as the final outcome of a process that begins with occasional drug-taking and ends with consumption of excessive amounts of drug to the detriment of society and the individual. Drug addiction is a chronic, relapsing disorder that provides research and treatment challenges to scientists from widely ranging disciplines."  It also stated that "Clearly, genetic differences and specific societal-environmental conditions can play a role in the development of drug abuse."

Behavioral scientists generally regard drug addiction as a behavioral disorder that results when drug reinforcers assume control over a substantial portion of an individual's behavioral repertoire (Higgins, Heil, & Lussier, 2004). As such, addiction to drugs can be considered a form of excessive behavior, occurring when other activities are expected and appropriate. (T;)

In a practice setting, social workers can use behavior theory as positive reinforcement.  The social worker can talk to the client to find out the reason why he/she uses drugs and make a plan with the client to help him/her. The client can get a movie ticket for every negative drug test, or the client gets cash.  So every time the client thinks about using drugs he or she will think about the reward/s and stay free of drugs.
