Social workers are expected to understand the length of time that therapy, services, and counseling are provided to the client. At the end of the service period, termination occurs. In this stage of the generalist intervention model, the client-social worker relationship concludes and the client is often expected to continue on as a self-reliant advocate, based on the intervention plan. It is important to prepare and empower clients for termination by referring to this time and date and by supporting understanding and acceptance of this stage in the intervention process.

- Share how termination is discussed with clients to prepare them for this stage.
- Discuss how your site uses follow-up with clients after termination. Keep in mind, follow-up is the stage where the social worker checks in to learn of the continued effectiveness of the intervention plan and assess ongoing progress.
