Think of a city such as Milledgeville, a county such as Baldwin, and/or a special district such as Macon-Bibb County Water/Sewer Authority.
Choose a local government (city or county, or Special District). It may be helpful to review the web sites of the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG.org), Georgia Municipal Association (GACities.com), and the International City Managers Association (ICMA.org). Remember, local governments are sub-state governments, so select a local government not a state. Introduce your chosen government to the class, describe its structure, including its branches, and then answer the following questions:
- Who are the legislators and executive(s) of this local government?
- What are some initiatives that your local government is currently working on?
- What is the people's perception of this local government (from local news or interviews)?
- From your research, is the local government doing well and fiscally stable?
- Is there a specific issue that the local government should address?
- How can citizens go about letting the local government know about your concerns? Are the meetings open to the public?
