1/ Bad Generalizations

Instructions: Explain why the sample used in the following generalization is likely to misrepresent the target population. Your explanation should be clear and thorough enough for a high school freshman to understand.

  • School administrators at Bayside High were alarmed by a rumor that a dangerous new drug, "Feelosophy," had recently grown popular among Bayside students. While users of the drug celebrate its powers to cause euphoric sensations and deep insights, the administrators were concerned that Feelosophy is also known to cause persistent headaches, prolonged feelings of apathy, and even despair. To determine whether the rumor was true, the administrators required all students present at school last Monday morning during homeroom to submit an anonymous questionnaire that simply asked, "Have you ever taken Feelosophy?" Only 2% of the surveyed students responded "Yes." The administrators were relieved to discover that such a small percentage of Bayside students had used the drug. (Note: You may assume for purposes of this problem that the students answered the questionnaire honestly.)

2/ Misleading Statistics

Instructions: Explain why the statistic used in the following problem does not support the conclusion the person draws from it. Your explanation should be clear and thorough enough for a high school freshman to understand.

  • Dr. McClellan reported to his PHIL 101 class today that he went back through his final grade records over the last several 10 years and found that approximately 25% of his PHIL 101 students receive A's compared to 50% of students in his 300 & 400-level philosophy courses. When Bob, a PHIL 101 student, heard Dr. McClellan's report, he stormed out of the room in anger and is now organizing a protest to get Dr. McClellan fired on the grounds that, "It is grossly unfair for a supposedly Christian professor to make his intro-level course harder than his upper-level course. What a jerk!"

3/ Identifying Multiple Explanations
