Operation: Therapeutic epidural block

Procedure: The patient is kept on the left lateral side. The back is prepped with Betadine solution, and 1 percent Xylocaine is infiltrated at the L5-S1 interspace. Deep infiltration is carried out with a 22-gauge needle, and a 17-gauge Touhy needle is taken and the epidural performed. After careful aspiration, which was negative for blood and cerebrospinal fluid, about 80 mg of Depo-Medrol was injected along with 5 cc of 0.25 percent Marcaine and 1 cc of 50 mcg of Fentayl. The injection was done in a fractionated dose in a slow fashion. The patient was examined and evaluated following the block and was found to have excellent relief of pain. The patient is advised to continue physical therapy and to come back in one month for further evaluation.
