Instructions

  • Please pick a movie with a strong central character and interesting setting for this assignment  =  The movie I chose to work on is
  • King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

  • Submission requirements : 1200-word (maximum) written answer spread across 3 different questions.

References:

  • For this assignment please use at least 3 academic/scholarly journal articles (minimum one per answer) that you find on your own. More is always excellent but remember HOW you use them is more important than any set number. There is no magic number of articles that gets a better grade – instead, use them well;
  • Please use in-text citations in APA format; References, subtitles, and in-text citations do not count toward your word limit - the text of any actual quotes does count however. Your essay references should appear last in the file. Cite all course material AND your own research.
  • When citing sources in a word document, utilize the "insert Comment" tool to specify the page and paragraph that you are referring to.

Goals:

  • To understand and describe concepts from the lectures on Tourism to Imaginary Places, the Host and the Guest in relation to a single movie;
  • To put your discussion in the context of material presented in the lectures and readings;
  • To expand on the ideas presented so far in this course with further readings uncovered on your own, in relation to your selected theme.

Preparation and Resources:

  • Review the lectures and the associated readings with this assignment in mind;
  • Complete the tutorial segments presented online (see Tutorial 4);
  • To expand on these ideas and concepts with academic/scholarly journal articles uncovered on your own, relating to any concepts, ideas or places that you discuss.

Steps:

IMPORTANTPlease USE THE BOLD HEADINGS BELOW in your text.

1200 words maximum in total for Parts 1, 2 and 3 combined. You may choose how to distribute them but there are guidelines below for you!

  • Part 1 – An Immersive Theme Park:
    • Provide a brief scholarly discussion (one to three paragraphs) of the concept of the theme park by exploring one that YOU CREATE (not an existing one) - that takes us to your imaginary place based on your selected movie.
    • Describe the park in an ‘overview’ thematic way;
    • Avoid pure description and make this an academic exploration (this is not a 'creative writing' exercise, but rather an academic one);
    • Consider the foundational elements of such theme parks as discussed in Reading A in the "Amalgamated readings for Tourism to imaginary places" in lecture 7;
    • Provide a brief scholarly discussion drawing on aspects of theme park design presented in the lecture and readings;
    • Fold in ideas from your own research that are appropriate to your discussion;
    • Approximate maximum 400 words total – guideline only.
  • Part 2 – An Immersive Dining Experience:
    • Provide a brief scholarly discussion (one to three paragraphs) of the concept of immersive dining by exploring one dining experience that YOU CREATE (not an existing one) - that takes us to your imaginary place based on your selected theme. Consider what we discussed in class as your baseline;
    • Avoid pure description and make this an academic exploration (this is not a 'creative writing' exercise, but rather an academic one);
    • Consider Reading G in the "Amalgamated readings for Tourism to imaginary places" in lecture 7;
    • Provide a brief scholarly discussion drawing on the aspects of immersive dining, and 'immersion' in general as presented in the lecture and readings;
    • Fold in ideas from your own research that are appropriate to your discussion;
    • Approximate maximum 400 words total – guideline only.
  • Part 3 – The Host and The Guest:
    • Imagine that a central character from your movie became a focus for tourism to a region on earth, in the way that we discussed Santa or Anne of Green Gables in the lecture;
    • Write a very brief introductory paragraph (one paragraph of just a sentence or two) about how your character would act as the focus of this region;
    • Provide a brief scholarly discussion (one paragraph) of the concept of the host in this region - what might be the benefits and/or challenges to the host - based on what we discussed in class and in the readings?;
    • Provide a brief scholarly discussion (one paragraph) of the concept of the guest in this region - what might be the benefits and/or challenges to the guest - based on what we discussed in class and in the readings?;
    • We know that space is limited and you can't be thorough here - so just make a good point or two for each section;
    • Fold in ideas from your own research that are appropriate to your discussion;
    • Approximate maximum 400 words total – guideline only

TUTORIAL 4 (for use in completion of Assignment 2)

Segment 1: Picking a Movie (as your theme for the assignment)

Step 1: Finding a Movie

Please pick a movie with a strong central character and interesting setting for this assignment

A great resource:

  • You can easily find lists of movies to assist you - this is a great site for that - here is the link!:

Movies that begin with the letter K (reelfilm.com)

  • Aim for 'fiction' steer clear of documentaries as these would not allow you to fully explore the imaginary aspects of this assignment;
  • Movies that focus on both the 'story world' and 'rich characters' as well as an interesting story are the easiest to work from.

Approach:

  • You may wish to watch this movie if you have not seen it, or at least watch clips and read a synopsis online;
  • Make notes about the main character(s) and the setting that you can use later;
  • You won't need a lot as each part is fairly short.

Step 2 - Testing your Movie

  • To 'test' your movie, do a little reading about it;
  • Why? You don't want to get too far into the assignment and find out that it won't work

Ask yourself:

  • Is there a well defined fictional setting that you can work with, or a real setting that you could reproduce?
  • Is there a clear story with elements that would be adaptable to your immersive experiences?
  • Is there a central character you could use for the host/guest discussion?

If you complete all of this and feel comfortable and interested in your movie - then you are all set!

We are always here to help.

  •  The movie I chose to work on is.
  • King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

Segment 2: Writing Tip!

Remember, this is not a creative writing exercise.

  • You want to jam pack concepts from the lectures, readings and your own research into this, and to do so in a tight, efficient way.
  • Show us what you know!

One great way to write this is to:

  1. Describe an element of your immersive experience (this is the creative part);
  2. Note the concept from the readings, lectures or your own research that you are reflecting on (eg. 'conceptual immersion', or the 'interface' - this is the academic part);
  3. Provide a citation to where you found the concept;
  4. Tell us the impact - how it would be experienced by the guest.

Then move on to the next one – this tells us about your immersive experience design ideas while at the same time jam packing in the course concepts (and the ones you find yourself) - this is very efficient.

There are other ways as well to do this of course, but this may help you to frame your thoughts.

So remember!

Don't just tell us 'what' you are doing - tell us 'why' and 'how' and back everything up with citations! Make this an academic submission.

Segment 3: Doing your 'original' research (refresher)

  • This segment will help you to dig into the original research for this project;
  • REMEMBER! We assume that you are  ALSO using the information presented in class, including class readings in your assignment - part of this assignment is of course showing us that you can apply this to your own City or Town (remember to cite it);
  • On top of this you must:
    • Use at least 3 academic/scholarly journal articles (minimum one per answer) that you find on your own;
    • More is always excellent but remember HOW you use them is more important than any set number. There is no magic number of articles that gets a better grade – instead, use them well;
    • These academic/scholarly journal articles uncovered on your own, can relate to any concepts, ideas or places that you discuss.
