Assignment 3 - Lotka-Volterra Competition Model Since I will be away for a while, I thought I would give you an easy one. The Lotka-Volterra models for testing the four possible outcomes of competition can be challenging to sort out. The Excel file for this assignment contains a model for examining what happens when two species have weak competitive influences on each other. This is something that can happen through resource partitioning or character displacement (ghosts of competition past). There are two figures in the Excel File. The first is the Lotka-Volterra model and the second is the change in the number of individuals for both species over time. Your task is to look at the L-V figure. Note the current pattern showing for changes in population size over time. The change in number of individuals over time stops at the intersection of the two lines (the lines reflect the carrying capacity of each species after accounting for competitive effect). This is stable equilibrium. Take a look at the population size figure to see this. Take a look at the Model worksheet. The two highlighted boxes are the numbers to change. Now go back to the L-V figure. The four dots are the key to the project. Select a population size that reflects the number of individuals of N, and N2 present. Change the numbers on the model (in the highlighted cells) to reflect number of individuals present for both species. The numbers do not have to be exact to where the white dots, just in the vicinity. Question - are you have made changes for all four dots, report what happened to population size over time according to the L-V figure and the population size figure.
