In this assessment, you will research and collect data on your technology connection/disengagement to assess the extent to which you are 'tethered' positively and/ or negatively to technology. The assessment requires you to assess your technology connection and its effects on your own personal thoughts and behaviour. In layperson's terms, if you are going to disengage, you may consider this assignment a reflection on your attempts at a "digital detox"; if you are going to increasingly engage, you may consider this a "digital plunge".

There are three parts to this assessment.

Part 1: A review of the academic research

Write a brief literature review of technology and digital connection studies and their effects on worker's engagement and disengagement. The report should start outlining the potential problems of more and/ or less digital connection, with potential solutions from the literature that you test in your own practice. You must consult and reference peer-reviewed journal articles to understand some of the health, psychological, and behavioural impacts of technology/digital connection on individuals and society. We advise you to focus on aspects that link to the elements you want to explore in your own technology engagement/disengagement and analysis for your reflection.

Part 2: Technology Experiment

You are to design and undertake a technology experiment. During this experiment you systematically collect data on how you use technology or how you disengage from using it. For example, how often and when you use social media, messaging, etc. You will need to describe how, why and when you are connected. We recommend using a daily journal (if 'detoxing') or your device monitoring apps (adding connectivity) to track your technology connection. The objective is to have a systematic way of monitoring your technology engagement/disengagement and how it affects you and your life in both positive and negative ways.

We recommend changing your habits (increased engagement or disengagement from technology) for a minimum of 10 continuous days and up to 14 days. Consider how you will measure and monitor your technology engagement/disengagement over the 10-14 days.

There are two options for this experiment

Technology Engagement (Digital Plunge)

OR

Technology Disengagement (Digital Detox)

Please remember, that we are not asking you to either radically engage or totally disengage from technology (depending on which you choose). Rather we are asking you to experiment with increasing or reducing your connection from non-essential use. You will still be able to use your devices in normal ways for work, study, and SAFETY uses!

Part 3: Analysis and Reflection

Describe your daily connection with technology and analyse your technology disengagement or engagement, linking your own experience to the broader literature you reviewed in Part 1. Describe the impact of constant technology connection and the impact of technology engagement and disengagement on your personal life, including ethical issues. The parameters will vary for each individual; you are encouraged to talk to your workshop leader about what changes are appropriate, either if you are going to add more connectivity, or if you choose to "detox". It is important that you consider your safety and health so that you do not put yourself in any potentially harmful or unsafe position while changing your habits to gain insights on how more or less connectivity affects you personally.

You should consider:

    • what you actually did: what, where, how, why and when
    • reflections on how you did: consequences, learnings, and outcomes
    • how your own experiences is similar to, or differs from, the literature you reviewed in Part 1
