Write a summary about the article based on the instructions below How to Write an Effective Summary 1. First, read and annotate the article, essay, or short story properly as discussed in class. 2. Start your summary by stating the article or essay title and the author's name. You should use quotation marks or italicize the title, depending upon the length. 3. Then state the main idea (the thesis) of the text in your own words. This could be your topic sentence. 4. Include the major supporting examples, facts, statistics and expert opinions that support only the thesis or main idea. 5. Write in your own words. You can paraphrase a line here or there. Do NOT use word for word text unless you are using a direct quotation, then use quotation marks. 6. Do NOT include minor information, repetitive examples or insignificant details. In other words, include the major support, not the secondary details. 7. Your summary should be a condensed (shortened) version of the text (at minimum 7- 10 sentences). 8. Be objective. The summary should be written in 3rd person and contain only the author's views, not your own. Save your view for the response section or for the essay you will write. 9. Use transition words in your summary to make the author's points clearer. 10. Be sure to include the author's final observations, conclusions or recommendations. This usually appears in the article's conclusion.
