Generally it is human tendency that we compare ourselves to other people wether it is social status, looks, personality, lifestyle, and appearance. Social theory was given by Leon Festinger in the year 1954. He said that as human we have this innate tendency to compare and evaluate ourselves to others. For example: In your first class test you match your score withe other students of the class in order to evaluate yourself with others. There are two types:
Upward Social comparison: When a person compares himself/herself with whom they believe are better then themselves. Upward comparison shows the desire to achievement and to improve the current status of ours.
Downward Social Comparison: is comparing ourselves to who are worse off then us and it is generally used when we want to feel good about our abilities. It gives us the sense to feel better that al least we are better then some people or certain people.
