The dependent variable is stripes because Chipmunk could only get them if exposed both to darkness ad light. Visually, you can put in independent variables in one box on left side and draw an arrow pointing another box on the right which you put variable stripes. In summary, Chipmunk got the stripes as result of being exposed both to light and darkness as opposed to other animals like Bear which argued that remaining in darkness could give them better sleep, and that is how Chipmunk differed with them.
