Can you comment on the below statement:
- What do you believe the true purpose of a college education is today? What do you think it will be in the future?
I think the true purpose of a college education today is to prepare individuals for the working world, at least for many students. Others may gain a better understanding of the world in general, and glean insights on how to navigate it. I believe the difference in goals determines the experience and value one gains from college, generally. Although I value a well rounded approach to education, I think institutions will continue to specialize and cater to the differing goals, further separating sciences, arts, and vocational programs.
- Do you believe colleges have a responsibility to teach concepts like "global understanding" and "cultural diversity and expression"? Why or why not?
I believe colleges are only really benefitting their students when teaching these concepts. Exposure to broader concepts and differing culture could change a students goals, effecting their scope, location or style of application of their education. I also understand when seeking a degree or accreditation for career purposes, especially when already working full-time, these subjects may feel like an impediment, or distraction. Though, i think most will still mark a change in their way of thinking or approaching things, and come to see some benefit.
- What do you hope to get out of your general education experience by the time you graduate?
From my general education, I hope to exercise and develop my critical reasoning and creative expression.
