The ladder diagram will contain: A timer instruction TOF: T4: 0. Three normally open contacts (XIC): I: 0.0 / 0, T4: 0. DN and T4: 0. TT. Two coils (OTE): O: 0.0 / 0, and O: 0.0 / 1.

The program will do the following:

1.- While I: 0.0 / 0 is deactivated, both coils O: 0.0 / 0, and O: 0.0 / 1 are deactivated.

2.- After I: 0.0 / 0 is activated for a brief moment, the timer registers DN, and TT become true and the EN register remains false. During this moment the timer is activated measuring the time (that is why the TT register is true and the coil O: 0.0 / 1 is also on). And since the timer is on, the ACC accumulator is advancing one unit per second.

3.- As soon as the accumulator reaches the preset time value (T4: 0. ACC = T4: 0. PRE = 5) the TT register becomes false, the O: 0.0 / 1 coil turns off, and the DN register becomes false, and causes the O: 0.0 / 0 lamp to go out as well.

4.- When input I: 0.0 / 0 = 0 is activated again, it repeats the previous cycle.
