Preparation - Developing Parallel Construction
Paragraph clarity can be improved by expressing similar ideas with similar grammatical structures. For example, if you are listing three ideas, do not use ing verb for two of the ideas and a ed verb with the third idea: reading, eating, and studying (not studied). Use adjectives with adjectives, verbs with verbs, phrases with phrases, and clauses with clauses. This list uses all verbs: the machine sorted, stamped, and counted (not and had a counter). For phrases, the wording for all parts of the list should be matched.
