Benefits of Electronic Health Record System Compared to a paper-based system
One of the benefits of the Electronic Health Record (EHR) compared to a paper based system is that it helps to save on time. In case of an emergency, the healthcare providers is able to access the patient's information at a short time compared to the paper-based system where the healthcare provider has to search for the information manually (Zandieh et al., 2008). Secondly, EHR plays a part in saving the environment compared to paper-based system. This is because it requires no papers for the recording of patient's information compared to the paper-based information which requires a lot of papers which are extracted from the trees. Moreover, the accessibility of the patient's information in EHR is more easier compared to that of a paper-based system. This is because the EHR has a search engine where searching for a patient's information only requires the healthcare provider to type the name of the patient. On the other hand, a paper-based system is tedious to access a patient's information because one has to go through a bulk of records to locate it. Finally, In EHR the patient's information is usually clear and legible compared to a paper-based system where sometimes the information may be unclear and sometimes do not have enough space for a healthcare provider to add more information about a certain patient.
Personally, I have had experience with the Electronic health Record.
In reference to my experience with the EHR, I would say it was beneficial because accessing a patient's information only required me to type the name of the patient in the search engine and I got everything about the patient including their treatment history. This did not only save on time when diagnosing the patient's condition but also improved the patient's satisfaction because they did not have to wait for long. Another beneficial experience I had with the EHR is that it helped in the improvement of quality healthcare because patient's could access their health information which helped in educating them about their conditions which promoted self care. In conclusion, the EHR helped me avoid panic situations in emergency cases and reduced my workplace errors. This is because its search engine is accurate in a way that it cannot provide you with wrong information and accessing the information about a certain patient was with much ease.
