Some asteroid collision avoidance strategies are mentioned. Which collision avoidance strategy(s) was used for Asteroid "2017 PDC"? As a member of the "Leaders Working Group" name at least one concern with using the chosen avoidance strategy. The two collision deflections used are kinetic impactor (KI) and ion beam shepherd (IBS). According to a study being done on this fictitious event, the ion beam can either partially or fully deflect the asteroid from hitting Earth entirely or deflect it to hit Earth in an unpopulated area. This is completely dependent on the size and predicted impact location (Bombardelli, et al. 2017). This can be carried out with the rendezvous spacecraft used to observe and study the asteroid. Basically this method uses an ion beam to create a force or torque on the target asteroid to deflect it from Earth. The biggest concern when using the IBS strategy is to maintain the appropriate distance from the asteroid for a prolonged period of time to ensure the beam is hitting the appropriate target area of the asteroid.
