*The term "a public space" means any location of New York City, such as a street, a sidewalk, a subway train car, a bus, a park, a bar, a store, or other public setting.
*A very memorable experience of your past city life means one that actually pertains to a) the unanticipated breaking, distraction, or interference of your routine activity or life in a public space because of your unavoidable encounter with a stranger (or strangers), b) a problematic, disruptive, or unusual situation or event you observed, or c) any positive thing that you or other stranger(s) near you did for another stranger in a public space (i.e., giving a hand).
The following questions will give you an opportunity to tell us more about your past public experience in New York City. Please answer openly and truthfully.
1) Briefly, state when and where this happened in the context of your destination at that time (e.g., going to work or school, rush hour, year, month, or season).
2) State the details of such past experience, including the general situation and specific nature of this problematic, unusual, or disruptive matter, incident, or event, as well as your speculated information about the general or observed profile of that stranger (or strangers) encountered by you directly or indirectly (or encountered with someone else when you were a passerby or bystander at that time).
3) During your encounter at that time, what was the general emotional state you experienced (ex., anger, fear, shock, discomfort, pride, gratitude)? Please explain why you felt that way.
4) During the time of your encounter with a stranger (or strangers), what specifically did that stranger (or strangers) do to you in terms of bodily, expressive or communicative, and/or behavioral aspects?
5) During the time of your encounter with a stranger (or strangers), what did you do (or how did you react) to that stranger (or strangers) in terms of bodily, expressive or communicative, and/or behavioral aspects?
6) During that time of your encounter with a stranger (or strangers), did you think of how to cope with a situational moment or occasion? If this is the case, describe your situational thoughts, appraisals, or plans you considered at that time.
7) After your experience of such a memorable occasion or event, did it cause you to alter your perceptions of others in public spaces, to change your daily routines, or to self-monitor your surroundings in New York City? Here, you can answer this query by uttering specific examples of your adaptive plans or maneuvers (e.g., your facial, bodily, or interactional schemes), including some of your own ways to manage your emotions, appropriate strategies of action, and adaptive behaviors in your public appearance.
