It is very likely that there are more of these beneath the border, but it seems the only technique anyone is using to find them is luck. Let's see if it would be feasible to detect these tunnels by doing a gravity survey. At the very least, we need to determine the gravitational anomaly generated by such a tunnel, to know if our instruments are sensitive enough to register a signal. For purposes of this calculation, assume that the tunnel is 2 meters high and 1 meter wide, and that the top of the tunnel is 20 meters below the surface (these dimensions are based on the press reports).
Assume a density of 2.67 gr/cm3 for the rocks surrounding the tunnel. What is the maximum gravity anomaly generated by this tunnel?
