The purpose of IUPAC is to promote the advancement of chemistry. IUPAC is the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry. Chemistry is the science which is concerned with how chemical elements and chemical compounds come together or come apart. IUPAC advances this field by offering it a common language standard which thus facilitates the flow of ideas and knowledge. This is called the IUPAC chemical nomenclature.
