1. Why do some executives refuse to function as project sponsors?

The role of the project sponsor is critical to secure the project funds and to provide a clear direction for the project. According to Kerzner (2013), "The ultimate objective of the project sponsor is to provide behind-the-scenes assistance to project personnel for projects both "internal" to the company, as well as "external"."

Project sponsors play a major role and have a significant influence on the success of projects. The transition to the role of project sponsor would require training and time to learn about the business. Project sponsors must have a solid business knowledge and excellent communication skills. In some situations, the project sponsor has other duties, which are very time demanding, and the additional responsibility would become an extra burden for them.

2. Can an executive be "forced" to function as a sponsor?

           By analyzing this case, I believe that an executive could be forced to act as a sponsor, but that would not be ideal. There would be challenges that would have to be overcome such as the delegation of responsibility portrayed in this case. According to Kerzner (2013), "Projects can still be successful without this commitment and support, as long as all work flows smoothly. But having a "big brother" available as a possible sounding board will surely help."

3. Is it right for the sponsor to be the ultimate person responsible for the success or failure of the project?

I believe that a project is a team effort where all members need contribute in order to achieve success so the responsibility should be shared. Project success should be a shared duty among the project team; the team members, project manager, project sponsor, and others have to work together in order to be functional.
