Contrast modelled and natural experiments. What are the benefits and drawbacks of each?
Modelled experiments have the advantage that they are generally less expensive than natural experiments, and they allow for the study of larger systems than can be manipulated with a natural experiment. Sometimes they are used to study types of things that would be difficult to control in a natural experiment such as the movement of air masses in weather events. Models also have their disadvantages. Sometimes it is difficult to tell if a model is accurate, without many natural experiments on the components of the system. Natural and modelled experiments therefore complement one another, and it is best if they are used together.
