Coaching is defined as a form of development in which an experienced person called a coach supports a learner in achieving a specific personal goal by providing training and guidance. In the above scenario, half of the population refuses to cooperate and for me to engage them in self-assessment I will use my coaching skills to make the class fully participate in the self-assessment session.

Step-by-step explanation

1.   Listening.

This is so important. You cannot be a good coach unless you listen and really listen. It does not mean you only listen to the said but also what is not being told. By doing this it will help me know why 5 people do not want to conduct an individual assessment and by listen I would have gotten a reason why they are behaving in such a way and a possible solution.

2.     Questioning.

Asking a question is the heart of great coaching. There are many questions that a coacher can address to the clients such as open questions. Examples of such questions include: What is stopping you? From these questions, you will be able to get the ideas of those who refuse to be couched.

3.     Building rapport.

This is the first skill you need to imply. Rapport should be created till the end of the session so as the gain trust of the respondents. When some of the students are not fully engaged then it means that there is no rapport, I will rectify this to gain their trust.

4.     Empathizing.

Empathy is defined as the ability to put yourself in someone's shoes to enable you to know why they are behaving in a given situation. The effect of empathy is to help you understand people's needs and to show understanding of their needs.

5.     Unlocking limiting beliefs.

Here a coacher imposes a challenging question intending to get a deeper response. By doing this it will help the coacher identify and challenge the underlying beliefs of respondents. Challenging questions will drive back those students who disagreed back to the session.

6.     Staying focus.

Lack of focus on both the coacher and the client may interrupt a coaching session. The coachee should maintain a high focus in his work to allow clients to imitate him for the coaching session to run smoothly.

7.     Giving constructive feedback.

During and after the coaching session a coacher should give a positive feed on behavior and participation to the clients. Giving negative feedback will make some clients not to engage fully in individual assessments.

8.     Being Non-Judgmental and open-minded.

A good coacher should not judge his fellow human being as people differ in their opinion. Coacher should accept all the responses from the clients and evaluate them according to his intelligence.
