Immigration of east Indians to Canada commenced during the late 1800s.They were referred to as the Hindus by the government authorities. Some of them were labourers who worked in the railway, lumber and mining industries and others were discharged British soldiers. (Bhatti, 1974) Most of them migrated from the Caribbean due to the economic hostilities. The Indians were however not welcomed and they faced racial discrimination from the local white Canadians.
During the immigrant journey, the immigrants were highly vulnerable to the environment conditions which resulted in the deaths of most of them, suffering from dehydration, hyperthermia, and heat strokes. (Weiss, 1992)This compromised their quality of life and resulted in many deaths. The strength of the group was in herd immunity and this helped in controlling spread of other diseases. The group also had their own medicine to take off the sick within the travelling band.
The nursing practitioner can connect with this immigrant group of population as they can learn on how care was provided for the sick and elderly during the period of migration using the most limited resources in harsh environments. (Miller, 2000) The healthcare unit of the migration group faced major difficulties in provision of care for the sick. During the epidemics that ravaged the population, the healthcare providers would create isolation centres to control the spread of the diseases and this has been applied by today's nurses.
The East Indian immigration group had difficulties in language interpretation and relied on interpreters who knew both Hindu and English. They also communicated using signs. Few interpreters who had mastered both languages helped them during their course.
As for me, I believe in equity and everyone should be given a chance. Regarding deportation I do not support because people come from all over for a better life which can be provided. The immigrants should be allowed to access healthcare like the other citizens as they are also humans. Education should be provided to all regardless of their status as immigrants.in terms of employment, it should be done on merit, whoever is best suited for the job should be given an opportunity, regardless of their status in the society.
