Calculate the total amount of work performed in 5 minutes of exercise on the cycle ergometer, given the following:
i) Resistance on the flywheel = 25 N
ii) Cranking speed = 60 rpm
iii) Distance traveled per revolution = 6 meters
Work = force x distance ; in our case the force is the resistance .
Lets calculate the distance in the case above ;
In one revolution the exerciser will go 6 meters therefore in 60 revolutions which occur in a minute they will have covered a distance of 60 x 6 = 360 meters.
In the 5 minutes of exercise they will have covered a distance of 360 x 5
= 1800 meters
The work done is
25 N x 1800 m
=45,000 Joules
The answer can also be written as 45 kJ
