A - Opinion Essays

B -Discussion Essays

C - Problem Solution Essays

D - Advantages & Disadvantages Essays

E - Double Question Essays

  1. This type of question is sometimes called a 'direct question' or 'two questions' essay. It consists of one statement, followed by two different questions about it. A mistake many students make is only focussing on one of the questions, or focussing more on one question than the other - this leads to an unbalanced piece of writing. Your introduction outlines what you will discuss in the rest of your essay and it is essential that you include everything that you will be writing about in this paragraph.
  2. These essays are sometimes called 'agree or disagree' or 'argumentative' essays and they are the most common type of essay question. The first part of the question is a statement and you will be required to give your opinion on this statement. It does not matter which side of the argument you take and in fact, it doesn't matter if you actually agree with it. Just choose an opinion you think you can develop the best argument for and don't change your opinion mid-way through the essay. Also, don't give reasons for an opposing point of view.
  3. This type of question starts with a statement, then asks you to discuss the causes and the solutions. For this reason, they are sometimes called 'causes and solutions' essays. A common mistake is for students to produce a list of all the causes and solutions without actually linking the causes/solutions together. Additionally, students fail to develop their explanations and fail to include examples.
  4. In this essay type, you have to discuss both sides of an argument and you are usually asked to give your opinion too. You should choose one side of the argument you agree with and one side you disagree with. Don't make the mistake of producing an unbalanced essay, whereby you only develop one point of view. It might be easier to start by discussing the side that you don't really agree with and in the next paragraph, present the arguments you do agree with.
  5. The first part of the question will be a statement. You will be asked to write about both the pros and cons of the idea stated. The problem is that there are three different types of this kind of essay and they each require a different approach.
