PLEASE READ THE SCENARIO AND DO THE REQUIREMENT! THANK YOU FOR THE HELP! I DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS!
Scenario: When an egg is thrown against a wall it breaks, but when the same egg is thrown into a bed sheet (held vertically by some people) it does not.
Requirement:
1)An explanation that uses the impulse momentum theorem to describe the science behind the action.
2)explanation should have discuss what is the goal of the action (to decrease/increase force, decrease/increase velocity/momentum).
3)Then discuss how this goal is being accomplished by influencing the time during which the force is acting on the object. Relate this to the impulse momentum theorem.
The answer is given below.
Step-by-step explanation
1. When the egg is thrown at a wall, it meets a force for a very short period of time which results in high impulse and thus breaks.
On the other hand, when thrown into a bedsheet, the momentum of the
egg decreases over a longer period of time and therefore it experiences less impulse. As a result of this, it does not break.
This is in accordance with impulse momentum theorem which states that, the change in momentum is equal to the impulse.
2. The goal of the action is to decrease the momentum of the egg when it hits the bed sheet.
3. The goal of reducing the momentum of the egg is achieved by
increasing the time of action when it hits the the bedsheet.
With a bedsheet, the force to stop the egg is spread over a greater period of time, this implies that
the impulse is much lower on the egg and it does not give enough force to crack its shell.
