What significant changes were prompted by the Protestant Reformation? How effective was the Roman Catholic Church in meeting the challenges presented?
Protestant reformation refers to the revolution in the religion sector that occurred in the sixteenth century, among the Western Churches. John Calvin and Martin Luther steered the reformation.
This reformation resulted in multiple occurrences: It led to the rise of Protestantism, which today is a significant subgroup of Christianity. Additionally, reformation resulted in changes in some of the doctrines of the beliefs of Christians (Becker, Pfaff, and Rubin, 2016). This divided the Christian in the west into Protestants and Roman Catholics. Reformation also changed the economy in that there was an alteration in labor demand between the secular and religious sectors. The secular occupations were taken up by the protestant graduates.
The Roman Catholic was slow to react to the Protestantism regarding the publicity, and theological changes of the reformers like Luther. The Catholics tried to term the allegations of Luther as heresy so that people would not convert to protestant. Catholics also excommunicated anyone who supported the reformers; this was to instill fear in people and hinder them from converting. Additionally, Catholics started schools, and missions to help stop the Protestantism. However, all these attempts did not succeed fully since a good fraction of people still followed the Protestants.
