During the 1820s-30s the United States was evolving into an increasingly
democratic society. Evaluate how this happened. What role did the public perception of Andrew Jackson
and his subsequent presidency play in this process?
A second party system was formed in the united states during 1820s hence pitting Jacksonian Democrats against whigs. Voting rights were also extended to all adult white men as political participation arose. Ordinary Americans also adopted the democratic rights of the revolution. Revolutionary ideals of equality and democracy had captured the imagination of the American people who later embraced the assumption that political participation should be for everyone bu8t not just property-owning elites (Flores & Nooruddin 2016).
With time, no one was required to own property in order to vote as it was required earlier. Voters but not state legislatures began to choose presidential electors by themselves. The public perception of Andrew Jackson made him limit expansion of democracy to only European Americans and voting rights to only adult white males. Once the people were given the right to vote, Andrew Jackson ended up benefitting because he was the people's president.
