This episode is all about your opinion of Creon, who is, of course, sitting pretty in power now that Oedupus’ heirs are both dead (nevermind the girls). Identify two quotes from him that make him seem like a good ruler. But then, how do you feel about this edict was unheard of, showing complete disregard for established norms that no one [not even Achilles] had ever broken? Does it seem just? Petty? Tyrannical? How does Creon behave when he doesn’t get this way?

For Question 1:

Creon was considered a good ruler although he's just sitting pretty in power because he proves himseld that he's responsible and a sensible leader. Also, in 'Oedipus the King', he embodies the reason. He was calm and he even protected his brother with gentle firmness while her brother cries out to be banished. These two passages or qoutes proved why he's still a good ruler.

  • "Listen, Ismenê: Creon buried our brother Eteoclês With military honors, gave him a soldier's funeral, And it was right that he should." -Antigone no.15

  • "I am aware, of course, that no Ruler can expect complete loyalty from his subjects until he has been tested in office. Nevertheless, I say to you at the very outset that I have nothing but contempt for the kind of Governor who is afraid, for whatever reason, to follow the course that he knows is best for the State; and as for the man who sets private friendship above the public welfare, --I have no use for him, either. I call God to witness that if I saw my country headed for ruin, I should not be afraid to speak out plainly; and I need hardly remind you that I would never have any dealings with an enemy of the people. No one values friendship more highly than I; but we must remember that friends made at the risk of wrecking out. Ship are not real friends at all. These are my principles, at any rate, and that is why I have made the following decision concerning the sons of Oedipus: Eteocles, who died as a man should die, fighting for his country, is to be buried with full military honors, with all the ceremony that is usual when the greatest heroes die"

-CREON no.145-160

What I felt after reading his edict concerning the burial is that it is fair and just to bury Eteocles with honor while Polyneices with no honor. It is the new policy and rule made by Creon which made people in silence, obey and afraid.

When Creon doesn't his way , He behave like a serious king. He was calm and feared the Gods and Godesses. He asses the situation and makes considerations. He was passionate in the law right up to the end. He is a calm and reasonable man but if things doesn't get his way, he is temperemental and irrational.
