1)explain your understanding of the mind-body problem
2)explain which view of the mind most agrees with your understanding of 'mind.' Are you a dualist? A materialist? Explain why; defend your position with reasons. In your response, make sure to explain the view you most agree with; in other words, if you say you agree with dualism, explain what the dualist view is, as well as why you agree with that view. Your response must make specific reference to the video as well as to one of the assigned readings from Chapter 5 in our text.

We have yet to find a physical explanation for the phenomena associated with "mind" (perceptions, actions, and so on). For too long, it was believed that these were two different entities connected by some unknown process.
It has been fairly obvious for about a century that the manifestations attributed to "mind" are almost certainly simply a feature of brain physiology. However, there are still a lot of pieces of the process that we don't understand. The mind-body problem will remain unresolved once we understand that, and it is arguably the single most significant science and philosophical problem.
In short, mind-body question is simple. How does the mind, which is immaterial, influence the body, which is material? How does my body accomplish the job of raising my arm as my mind commands it? Sure, electrical impulses are sent to my arm, but how do I regulate those electrical impulses? What is the relationship between the material body and the immaterial mind? The mind and body must be closely related in some way, but no one knows how, which is the problem.
Physicalism, as explained in the video, is the assumption that the universe is completely made up of physical matter, including ourselves. That all about me and you, according to this logic, can be explained in terms of our bodies, brains, hormones, and neurotransmitters.
In fact, we understand how the brain acts. The effects of electromagnetic and gravitational forces on the simple elementary particles - electrons, neutrons, and protons - can explain any single occurrence in the brain. The weak and strong forces, as well as quantum mechanics' odd behaviors like entanglement, can be overlooked.
We can also be assured that there are no unseen forces or particles impacting us: our instruments are much too strong to have overlooked any such entities.
We have no reason to assume that the mind does not take priority over the brain. In other words, we are certain that the biology, chemistry, and physics of the neurons and glia that make up our brains will completely explain all facets of the mind.
There is a lot of scientific data to back up what I'm saying.
1. We can completely simulate the brains of very primitive animals on a machine.
2. Chemicals may be used to regulate many types of actions.
3. We have the power to turn our consciousness on and off at will.
4. In some experiments, we were able to hear people's thoughts (albeit at a very primitive level).
5. Neurologists can diagnose brain pathologies by behavioral changes.
6. Some split-brain studies have shown that various parts of the brain regulate different aspects of actions.
7. Using electrical representations of neurons, we can toggle particular memories on and off.
There is a lot more evidence, but those are the most significant ones.
