a) Since the investment bank doesn't have a requirement of margin and is willing to enter into unlimited long positions the number of short positions that can be entered into is also unlimited. The $ 200,000 in the trading account wont be used for collateral as there is no margin or settling up requirement upfront.
b)The value of position as on June 2020 can be given as per the equation below
Value= Spot Price - ((Future Price)/ (1+ risk free interest rate)
Given, Spot Price/barrel = $80 , Future Price for 10 month forwards for Dec2020= 52.80, Risk Free interest rate = 1.5%=.015
Thus value= 80- ( 52.80/ 1.015)=$ 28.76
c) The value of my position is positive and in total $ 28.76 *1000*100=$ 2,876,000 in June 2020. As the bank. Thus the bank is at a loss of $ 2,876,000 as on the date and there is always a counter party risk that that the bank might fail to pay to settle the position.
d) 95% VAR is given by 1.65 Standard Deviations ( SD) from the mean. Given SD= 1.5%. Thus 95% VAR= 1.65* 1.5%=2.475%.
The value of 100 forward contracts as on June 2020 = $ 80/barrel*1000 barrels/contract* 100 contracts= $ 8,000,000.
Thus 95% VAR= 2.475% of $ 8,000,000= $ 198,000.
