It is without doubt that self and culture are complimentary concepts. I believe that how we see ourselves shapes our lives and the same is also shaped by individual cultural context. Besides, self-perceptions influence different aspects of human lives including individual's well-being, political actions, community engagement, health and lifestyle choices, our social relationships, as well as how we think about the world. Culture, which is often considered as a source of stereotypes, is the basis of which individuals in different parts of the world view themselves in several ways. In addition, western cultures promote considering oneself as different from other individuals. The same culture often emphasizes some ways of being independent such as self-expressive, self-directed, and being different from others. However, other self-behaviors are not complimented by culture. These include being consistent across contexts, self-reliant, and self-interested. Cultural individualism is directly linked to independent self-perception, just as it is commonly presumed. Besides, I think a richer comprehension of cultural variation is based on the core self. The core self is identified as something distinctive to a person, as opposed to the characteristics or traits that are common across culture, nation, group, or family.
