What is a branch code in a bank?

The most common branch code is a SWIFT Code or BIC. These codes are used in the US and Europe and a number of other countries. In India they are known as IFSC code. With the advent of internet banking, the Branch Codes have become more important as they are used to differentiate the accounts from different banks and branches.
