What are the three major components of the criminal justice system?

The three main components of the criminal justice system are law enforcement, the courts, and corrections. Law enforcement officials respond to calls, investigate crimes and crime scenes, arrest perpetrators, and sometimes testify in court. They also make reports and do required paperwork. The courts hear the evidence that is presented in criminal cases and make decisions about sentencing and penalties. The corrections department runs the jails and prisons and also serve as probation officers for those perpetrators who remain in the community.
