What does a culture medium provide to a living cell?

The culture medium provides nutrients to the cell. This can be in the form of both micronutrients and macronutrients. The culture media also provides any other factors required for growth such as hormones. It also provides the cell with an environment into which it can excrete waste substances. These waste substances can then diffuse away from the cell before building up to toxic levels.
