Describe two methods of research for studying neural function (describe at least one that uses the behavioral or cognitive approach). How do these methods complement one another? What are the limitations of each method?
Answer:
Methods for studying the neural function:-
(a) Brain staining
This method is carried out by staining the neuronal connections. With the use of high-resolution microscopes researches looks into the neuronal functioning. BRAINBOW is an example of this mechanism, where individual neurons are differentiated from neighboring ones by making use of fluorescent proteins.
(b) Brain lesioning:-
It might be either an artificial or natural way. The former is made possible through surgeries or by using drugs or even by means of laser treatments. Whereas the latter occurs naturally by means of any damage or accidents to the brain.
This method helps researchers to focus on behavioral changes as a result of localized brain damages.
both of these methods are complementary to each other as the former gives exact pathways of neurons in the brain whereas the latter gives what behavioral changes happen as a result of damage to such pathways.
