An X-ray reveals a fracture of the lower leg. (Learning Objectives 2, 3, 4, 12)
1. Describe the relationship between long bones and hematopoiesis.
2. What are the potential bones that could be fractured in Mr. Bailey’s lower leg? Explain the function of the affected bones.
3. Discuss the limited movement that Mr. Bailey is experiencing.
Answer:
1, Hematopoiesis occur in the marrow of the long bone. the production of all type of blood cells and blood plasma occur in a hematopoietic system that includes organ tissue like bone marrow, liver, spleen. hematopoiesis process body manufacture blood cells. pink marrow found in the hollow inside the middle portion of the long bones. there are several diseases involve in the bone marrow. in case of severe blood loss body convert yellow marrow back to red marrow to increase the blood cell production.
2, lower leg contains 30 bones. it include the femur, patella, tibia, fibula, tarsal bones, metatarsal bones, phalanges. femur provide weight-bearing and stability of gait. Tibia's main function in the leg is to bear weight. patella increases the forces from quardicepts muscles. the fibula is a long, thin and lateral bone, it runs parallel to the tibia. it stabilizes the ankle and supporting muscles of the lower leg. tarsal bone provides movement in the foot. phalanges support fingernails on the dorsal side of the fingers.
3, patient have limited movmenent in left knee. left knee has knee cap called patella. it is a semifalt, triankle bone. it move when knee bends. it increase the force from quadriceps muscle that streaghen and extend the knee.when there is break over a patella quadrcpes can not streghtne the knee and patient have limited movement in the lower leg.
