Why the trendelenburg position is the commonly used in patient who experienced shock?

  • Trendelenburg position is described as head is lowered while the patients legs and body is elevated in an inclined manner. It is commonly used in patient who experience shock specifically hypovolemic shock because we need to divert the blood flow towards the brain with the help of gravity. Diverting the blood towards the brain will help to decrease the damage of hypoxemia to the brain. Also, it is one of the easiest maneuver to do when patient is on shock.

Explain why anaphylactic shock occurs upon administering a certain injectable drugs to a patient?

  • Anaphylactic shock is a severe form of allergic reaction and if left untreated could lead to death. It is caused by different allergens including drugs. Drug induced anaphylaxis when a drug allergen (most commonly antibiotics) is recognized by the B-cell. B-cell then release immunoglobulin E. The IgE binds to the cell surface of a mast cell or a basophil ( a type of white blood cell in our body). This phase or phenomenon is called the sensitization phase. The next time the same drug or allergen is being introduced to the patient, the allergen will bridge the gap between two IgE in the cell surface of the mast cell or basophil causing them to degranulate. The granules of basophil contains histamine which causes vasodilatation. Vasodilation can be recognized as the redness of the patients' skin and worst is edema of the lungs that leads to difficulty in breathing.

Explain why excessive sunbathing in the beach can lead to hypovolemic shock.

Excessive sunbathing can cause sunburn. When you are in a state of sunburn your body tends to secrete high levels of cytokines. These cytokines increases the leakiness of the capillaries resulting to reduced amount of blood volume inside the intravascular space and lesser perfusion of the blood to the different hollow organs resulting to hypovolemic shock. Hypovolemic shock occurs when there is less perfusion or less supply of blood towards the different vital organs.

Explain why spinal cord injury causes neurogenic shock

  • Spinal cord injury is most commonly caused by spinal column trauma. Our spinal cord is responsible in sending signals in different parts of our body. It also dictates our organs of their function, for example, the rhythmic beating of our heart. When there is spinal cord injury the sympathetic tone is disrupted resulting to hypotension. Thus, perfusion and blood flow is lesser resulting to so-called neurogenic shock.

As a student of nursing, kindly explain well why you are best suited to become a REGISTERED NURSE in the future.

  • I am best suited to become a REGISTERED NURSE in the future because I have the heart to help, I have the knowledge to think, I have the hands to heal, and most especially I have the God to guide me towards this path. This path I took may be difficult, but with my perseverance and grit I will have that RN at the end of my name very soon.
