Most of us have been involved in some type of organizational change. Has it been effective and long lasting of have things gone back to the way they were before one the ‘start-up’ phase was over? Change is an inevitable process which occurs in an organization for the good of the organization. However, change always meet very radical resistance in case the implementation process is not well managed.

one of the changes which occurred in our organization was introduction of a new technology which was to be installed at the gate for all the employees to clock when they check in and when they check out. this was meant to eliminate the traditional signing of a book whenever one arrived or left the organizational premises.

the implementation of the change.

the manager decided to come up with the idea without consulting or rather informing the employees. after the gadget was installed, the manager decided to write a memo to inform the employees of the new advancement.

effectiveness of the change

the change process was not effective as the employees remained very rigid to the change. this is because they were not involved in the change process yet the change was directly involving them. as a result, the employees decided to sabotage the whole process by secretly destroying the installed gadgets which made the manager to think of a better way of communicating this change.

what i could have done differently.

given the opportunity, i could have communicated to the employees about the impending change and make them understand the reasons as to why the change was necessary. this would include conducting in-seminars where the change process would be communicated before any advancement is made.

 

for an effective organizational change, a manager should ensure that they involve the employees and communicate the change in the best ways possible to make the employees feel part of the change process. this will enable them to reduce resistance to such change and hence contributing to the success of the change within an organization.
