1) Describe how the unique structure of a neuron relates to is function in the body.
2) What are the similarities and differences of neurons with other cells?
The most unique and important structures of a neuron are the long extensions that extend out from the body cell. For example ,dendrites are extensions of neurons that bring signals to the cell body while axons take away signals from the cell body to other cells. The neuron's long extensions help to transmit impulses over long distances within the body. The cell body which is the neuron's core carries genetic information, maintains the neuron's structure and provides energy to drive activities.
Neurons are similar to other cells in the body such that;
*They are surrounded by a cell membrane
*They have a nucleus that contains genes
*They contain cytoplasm ,mitochondria and other cell organelles
*They carry out basic cellular processes such as protein synthesis and energy production.
They also differ from other cell in such ways ;
*They have dendrites and axons which transmit .
*Neurons communicate with each other through an electrochemical process.
*Neurons contain some specialized structures (for example, synapses) and chemicals (for example, neurotransmitters).
